5 Ways to Maintain Youthful Looking Skin

We all worry about the day we look in the mirror and begin to notice a change in our skin. Oftentimes, the first signs of aging feel as if they appear overnight! It might be a slight crease in the forehead, or when we laugh the lines around our mouth stick around for a bit longer, or perhaps you've noticed your skin isn't bouncing back the way it used to. And so, we begin the search for the perfect combination of skincare essentials in an attempt to stay forever young.

While growing older is unavoidable, there are many ways to help maintain your skin’s youthful glow:

Use a cleanser that suits your skin

The purpose of cleansers are simple: to cleanse your skin. They are used to remove excess buildup, sweat, oils, and leftover makeup. Since they are not a product that is being absorbed, you don't need to spend a lot of money on them. If you’re going to invest in a skin product, it would be far more beneficial to use the money towards a professional night cream or moisturizer (more on this later).

However, price tag aside, it’s incredibly important that you do your homework before choosing a daily cleanser for your skin. Is your skin oily, dry, or a combination? What are your main concerns when it comes to your skin? Are you paying attention to what ingredients are in your cleanser?

If you’re not sure what cleanser to use, it’s best to speak to a professional. At the Spa Room, we offer a free 30-minute skin consultation where we can discuss everything skincare with you. To book your consultation, click here

No matter what cleanser you choose to use on your skin, keep this in mind: there is a BIG difference between soap and cleansers. While they may feel effective, soaps typically dry out your skin and give it a tight feeling, which is not what we want. These products strip the skin and can cause sensitivities, dehydration, and other skin problems later in life.

Keep your skin hydrated

Now, back to our point above concerning moisturizers. Keeping your skin hydrated is one of the most important things when it comes to looking youthful. Getting your daily water intake is one way to help, however, drinking water only accounts for around 4% of surface hydration, so investing in an effective moisturizer is a must.

Day creams are typically lighter, sometimes contain SPF and can be applied underneath makeup. Day creams are meant to simply moisturize the skin. Since we’re exposed to the sun’s rays during the day, your day cream likely doesn’t include any actives.

Night creams are a heavier consistency and moisturize your skin more deeply. We highly recommend adding a night cream into your skincare routine if you haven’t already. Your skin repairs itself at night, so choosing a night cream with actives such as Retinol, Vitamin C, or Hyaluronic Acid is greatly beneficial!

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!

This one is simple, and the most important: protect your skin from harmful UV rays! UV Rays are the number one cause of premature ageing and skin damage. You need to be re-applying your sunscreen every two hours to make sure you’re receiving the best protection.

Get enough sleep

As we said above, your skin repairs itself at night. If your body doesn’t have enough time to rest, it can’t restore itself to its full ability—your skin included! We recommend a minimum of 6 hours of sleep per night.

We also know that’s not always possible: If you need a little pick-me-up in the morning, look for cooling products infused with caffeine that you can use while getting ready. Good examples of these would be under-eye patches, sheet masks, or cc-creams.

Invest in facials or other skin treatments

Facials aren’t just for relaxation, they are also beneficial investments for your skin!

Your skin typically changes depending on the season and your lifestyle. Therefore, the skincare that you’re using right now may not be the best choice for your skin in a few months.

Seeing a skincare professional allows you to discuss your concerns, go over your routine, and talk about what products and treatments that are best suited for your skin type and concerns. Just because a product is expensive, endorsed by celebrities, and has great reviews - doesn’t mean it is always the best choice.

A facial is a great way to address those concerns in a safe and relaxing environment using high-quality professional ingredients, concentrated actives, and devices suited to your skin’s needs.

At The Spa Room, we offer a wide range of customized treatments for your skin. If you’re unsure of what your skincare needs may be, contact us! We want you to love the skin you’re in.
